    Fulton Hogan engaged Structex to support with design of the temporary works involved in the deconstruction of two cast in-situ reinforced concrete bridges crossing Henderson Creek on State Highway 16. Structural steel launching trusses were re-purposed from a previous construction of a new bridge, to lift and remove substantial concrete bridge beams. Verification of these trusses involved a considered safety in design approach, a large array of support conditions and load cases, specification of counter-weights to back-launch the truss cantilevered over water, design of support frames and connections and detailed methodology plans illustrating the sequence of work.

This involved design of 4m diameter caissons to create a dry working environment up to 10m below the high-tide level. Health & Safety was the key driver in this design due to the harsh seaside environment and work involved. This project required an iterative development of repair methodology with the contractor to meet a variety of constraints and challenges.

  • Tiwai Point, Bluff

    Completion: 2011

    Construction: Fulton Hogan

    Designed and constructed between 2008 and 2011, this project involved the overall project design and coordination, assessment and reburbishment of the existing bridge piers and design of new approaches and abutments for a total deck replacement of approximately 500m length. The new deck consisted of a two-lane wide 900mm double hollowcore structure. The deck units were a Stahlton design-build component. Structex worked with contractor Fulton Hogan to design a bespoke gantry crane system to remove the old sections of deck and place the new double hollowcore units. This unique construction methodology gave Fulton Hogan a competitive advantage, enabling it to secure the contract with the Invercargill City Council.

    Structex was engaged to design the powerhouse for the 7.7MW Amethyst Hydro Scheme. This involved the design of a precast concrete building envelope with a removable roof for equipment installation. The foundations were over 4m deep to encompass the penstock generator and tailrace. A challenging design due to the impact of the Alpine Fault located less than 1km away. Health & Safety was the key driver in the design due to the harsh environment and depth of excavations.

    Structex was engaged to design the temporary works to enable both the construction of the new Motu bridge, and then the subsequent demolition of the original 1920s single-lane bridge. This involved a creative self-supporting cradle system which removed the need for substantial propping when casting the piers, as well as lifting plans and careful cross-reviews of designer and contractor methodologies. A key challenge which was overcome was ensuring the stability of the original structure when parts were being cut and removed to maintain a safe site for those carrying out the demolition works.
