Pacific Tower

Location
166 Gloucester Street, Christchurch

The 22-level Pacific Tower is tall and slender, needing a structural steel building system that provides a light structure to reduce foundation sizes and allow fast construction. However, there are seismic and wind sensitivity issues in such a tall building.

Structex met these challenges by including an eccentric k-braced tube up the centre of the building to limit torsional effects, and carefully located and detailed structure to suit hotel room configurations. Christchurch’s tallest building performed well in the 2010 earthquakes, being one of the few remaining CBD high-rise buildings which could be readily and economically repaired. Today it is home to the Rendezvouz Hotel.

This project received an ACE NZ Award of Excellence Merit Award in 2010.
