HSBC Tower

Location
Worcester Boulevard, Christchurch

Originally known as “Club Tower” this was the South Island’s first A-grade office accommodation tower with a five-star green building rating. It comprises a nine-storey steel frame tower over a three-storey pre-cast concrete podium with full basement parking.

The site presented geotechnical challenges caused by its proximity to the Avon River; ultimately a reinforced concrete basement raft foundation was adopted that extended to the boundaries and neighbouring buildings on all sides. HSBC Tower suffered only minor damage and was passed fit for reoccupation following the Canterbury earthquake of February 2011 without requiring any structural repair. The building’s performance is widely credited to the expertise of the Structex team and the quality of workmanship.  It has been described as the safest multi-level building in Christchurch, and has become a case study for the successful design of high-rise buildings in an earthquake zone.
